Everton has been given a further two-point deduction for a breach of Premier League Profitability and Sustainability rules (PSR), the league has confirmed.
The Toffees were referred to an independent commission in January after their financial accounts for the 2022/23 season. The club was docked an initial 10 points, reduced to six on appeal, earlier this season.
Now, it has been reduced another two points to fall a place in the Premier League table. Sean Dyche’s men are now 16th in the league, two points off Nottingham Forest.
Everton has not confirmed whether it will appeal the second penalty or not. However, it must notify its intent to do so within seven days.
According to our sister title Liverpool Echo, Everton set out its position in a three-day hearing last month. The appeal panel for Everton’s first charge said that there had been two “legal errors” in the club’s original verdict but then the independent commission handling Nottingham Forest’s charge only handed them a four-point deduction for a breach 77% larger than Everton’s, acknowledged it could not be sure how even the reduced punishment handed to the Blues had been calculated.
The latest deduction of points mean Forest is now two points behind Everton with six games remaining – though the Toffees do have a game in hand.
