For nearly five decades, Erelu Abiola Dosumu has remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s social landscape. The traditional aristocrat and socialite is widely regarded as a symbol of grace and longevity in elite circles, having maintained relevance across different eras while many of her contemporaries have stepped back from public life or quietly faded into obscurity. Known for a reserved public manner, measured influence, and consistent personal style, Erelu Dosumu has established her reputation well before the rise of social media. Her quiet demeanour, impeccable manners and natural sophistication effortlessly project dignity and class. These qualities have kept her central to conversations around style and tradition, and have contributed to her enduring relevance as she approaches Octogenarian status.
Erelu is often described as a doyenne who has prioritised authenticity and substance over trends —a quality that has earned her recognition across generations as one of the grand dames of Nigeria’s society.
The Erelu Kuti IV will be 79 years-old on Wednesday July 29. Expectedly, Erelu, who also doubled as the Yeye Oodua of the source is planning a weekend getaway to celebrate the birthday which she has tagged: ‘Paris Pre-80th Birthday Events’.
Family sources told Spotlight that Erelu will be hosting a select group of family, friends, and associates in Paris, France. The three-day destination celebration will be held between Thursday July 30 and Saturday August 1 and it will bear all the hallmarks of Erelu’s legendary taste for excellence.
The first day has been dedicated for the arrival of those select luminaries from social, political, and business circles who will gather to honour the milestone. On the following day there will be a church thanksgiving service followed by a grand reception at a private venue in the French capital. On the last day, Erelu will treat her eminent guests to a celebration at sea as they will have lunch aboard a luxury cruise ship sailing on the popular 777-kilometre-long River Seine.
Famed for her ageless élan and signature preference for pristine white ensembles, Erelu’s Paris fete is merely a curtain-raiser. It is to serve as a prelude to a larger celebration planned for July next year, when the evergreen queen of style turns 80 —a milestone that promises to be yet another defining moment on Nigeria’s social calendar.
