Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) is taking a major step into high-level scientific research as it prepares to inaugurate a new DNA centre at its main campus in Ugwuomu Nike before the end of the year.
The centre is expected to strengthen the university’s research profile and provide vital support for scientific inquiry within Enugu and beyond.
The Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, announced the development during the institution’s 13th convocation marathon race, describing technology and innovation as central to GOUNI’s mission.
He said the new facility would open fresh opportunities for research, development and community impact.
“Our aim is to foster inclusive education and make a positive impact in Enugu State and beyond,” he said, noting that the university’s focus on practical learning continues to yield strong results.
Beyond its research ambitions, GOUNI says it is equally proud of the success of its graduates. Rev. Fr. Anieke said over 70 percent of the university’s graduates secure employment immediately after their national service — a testament to the institution’s industry-focused training approach.
The marathon race signalled the beginning of a series of convocation events, including Creativity Day, the Parents’ Forum, Entrepreneurship Day and the Convocation Lecture.
Two well-known Nigerians will be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees, while two senior academics will be named Professor Emeritus.
The convocation ceremony will climax on Saturday, when 560 graduates will receive their certificates — a celebration of years of dedication and family support.
For the university, the inauguration of the DNA Centre marks a new chapter in its growth. With greater research capability, GOUNI said it is positioning itself as a hub for innovation, scientific advancement, and community development.
