The Chimaobi Sam Atu Foundation has awarded Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) scholarships to 237 students from 28 public schools in Enugu North and South Federal Constituency.
The beneficiaries were selected based on merit, following a scholarship examination conducted in November 2024.
Presenting the awards, president of the Foundation and federal lawmaker, representing Enugu North and South, Chimaobi Atu, said the scholarship aims to promote a strong academic culture among students and ease financial pressure on parents.
Atu also announced that another round of scholarships would be awarded next week to indigent students with special cases who did not qualify through merit.
Chairman, Education Directorate of Chimaobi Sam Atu Foundation (C-SAF), Dr. Chidiebere Ezinwa, described the initiative as a wake-up call for parents, school authorities, and students to prioritise academic excellence.
“Today, we are grateful to announce that over 230 students will be recipients of the scholarship this year. The participation of public schools in the scholarship programme has expanded from 24 schools last year to 28 this year, encompassing even the school for the deaf and dumb in Coal Camp and technical colleges within the constituency.
“It is noteworthy to mention that earlier this year, the Education Board of Chimaobi Sam Atu Foundation, extended scholarship awards to over 40 primary pupils to pursue studies in the nation’s unity schools, recognising the low representation of students from the constituency in such institutions.
“In alignment with the educational mandate of the Foundation, which aims to foster academic excellence and healthy competition among public school students in the constituency, while preparing them for external examinations, the Directorate took a more rigorous approach this year in selecting the scholarship recipients.
“This involved conducting a standardised examination at eight centres for students across all public schools in Enugu North and South Federal Constituency on Saturday, November 15, 2024,” he said
Ezinwa further stated that the examination was meticulously supervised, and the results were meticulously processed by trained personnel to ensure the utmost integrity and reliability of the outcomes.”
Ebube Okonkwo from Uwani Boys Secondary School, who emerged the overall best student in the scholarship exercise, received special recognition. Command Day Secondary School, recorded the highest number of students with A1 grades.
