From Jude Chinedu, Enugu
The traditional ruler of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Aloysius Ogbonna, has congratulated former governor of old Anambra State, Sen. Jim Nwobodo, on receiving a lifetime achievement award from Vanguard Newspaper.
Speaking with journalists in Enugu on Sunday, Igwe Ogbonna described the honour as well-deserved, noting that Nwobodo’s contributions to national and regional development remain evident across the South East.
He said the former governor, an indigene of the Ntu-egbenese clan, has consistently demonstrated commitment to the growth of Enugu State and the wider region, leaving behind projects and policies that continue to impact lives.
According to the monarch, the award is a fitting recognition of Nwobodo’s legacy, particularly his achievements during his tenure between 1979 and 1983.
He recalled that the former governor established the Anambra State University of Science and Technology, as well as colleges of education in Nsugbe and Eha-Amufu, to expand access to higher education.

Igwe Ogbonna also highlighted Nwobodo’s investments in infrastructure and sports, including the construction of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and improvements in road networks and public facilities across present-day Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi states.
He added that the former governor boosted tourism and commerce through projects such as Nike Lake Hotel and Ikenga Hotels in Enugu, Onitsha, and Awka, while also strengthening the media sector with the establishment of Anambra State Television.
Describing Nwobodo as “an icon of leadership, a father figure and a mentor to many,” the monarch urged younger leaders to emulate his style of governance, which he said prioritised practical results and people-centred policies.
He further noted that such recognition should inspire unity, diligence, and renewed commitment to community development across the South East and the country.
Igwe Ogbonna also commended Vanguard for recognising excellence and prayed for continued grace and good health for Nwobodo and his family.
