The Enugu Campus Hackathon, a state-backed technology and entrepreneurship programme, is rapidly becoming a major catalyst for innovation among young people in Enugu State. Supported by the Enugu SME Center and the Office of Digital Economy (Enugu MSME & Startup Agency), the initiative is designed to help students turn ideas into prototypes and prototypes into viable businesses.

The hackathon is a key component of the state’s Digital Economy Transformation Plan and aligns with Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s goal of making innovation and digital entrepreneurship central to Enugu’s economic growth. Its structure takes participants from ideation through a bootcamp and into the Enugu Startup Accelerator, ensuring continuity beyond the competition stage.

Led by Arinze Chilo-Offiah, the Enugu SME Center says the programme forms part of broader efforts to expand digital infrastructure, develop tech talent and strengthen support systems for innovation across the state. Partners such as Genesys Tech Hub, The Garage and Capitis Global Ventures provide mentorship and market-focused guidance to participating teams.

Students from six universities, UNN, UNEC, ESUT, IMT, GOU and Coal City University take part in the competition, along with an “Others” category for independent innovators. This year, the University of Nigeria Nsukka recorded a strong turnout, with finalists including EulaIQ, FLOF Mart and The Mavericks. Learning-track teams such as Mindnest, ChainMove and MarTech also benefited from hands-on training during the bootcamp.

Other universities produced teams tackling challenges across education, health, finance, agriculture and logistics. These include Teeketing, BuildNation, Anbu Gynaecare, Growdex and Gencoach. Independent innovators such as Linia Finance, SpitchLabs and Inova also featured in the programme.

Organisers say the hackathon’s emphasis on solving real-world problems is one of its core strengths. Participants learn value proposition design, user testing and market alignment skills that remain crucial long after the event ends.

Promising teams move on to the Enugu Startup Accelerator for continued mentorship, technical support and access to funding opportunities, ensuring that strong ideas are nurtured into viable ventures.

Officials note that the hackathon is building a pipeline of young innovators who are strengthening the state’s digital economy. As more participants refine prototypes and pursue entrepreneurial paths, Enugu is steadily positioning itself as one of Nigeria’s rising innovation hubs.
