Today marks the fifth anniversary of a tragic moment in the history of Nigeria when both young and old unitedly rose against the grisly killings from the police, governance failures and corruption.
The strong movement was indeed widespread nationally and globally, amassing over 28 million tweets under #ENDSARS.
Despite this, unresolved issues continue to haunt the country’s quest for justice.
Below are some of them:
1. Lack of accountability for the Lekki Toll Gate massacre
On the 20th of October 2020, soldiers reportedly opened fire on the protesters, resulting in casualties, while others suffered injuries.
While the judiciary confirmed the act, no officers or soldiers faced prosecution.

2. Continued police brutality
Even after the protest, the police continue to target journalists, youths and protesters. It was reported that nearly 300 EndSARS protesters are still detained without trial in Lagos State.
Many residents still complain about the brutality and harassment they face in the country.
3. Unimplemented reforms and broken promises
The demands and requests of the protesters gathered dust after panels submitted reports. Many issues, like underfunding and corruption, were left unaddressed.
The protest would have been successful, but the lack of leadership hindered the demonstration.
4. Injustice for detained protesters and broader human rights abuses
During the protests, many were arrested without a single trial, leading to the abuse of human rights.
Significant cases like Nnamdi Kanu, who is still being detained over terrorism charges despite a court order granting his release, stand out.
5. Erasure of collective memory and youth disillusionment
The movement is a pivotal moment in the nation’s collective memory; however, concerns about the erasure of this memory and youth disillusionment cannot go unnoticed.
If it continues, the country could face severe negative consequences.
