The on-going initiative by world leaders to end the Russia-Ukraine war is commendable. President Donald Trump of United States and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and other European leaders held high-level talks recently at the White House on ending the war. Earlier, Trump and Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, met in Alaska, a non-contiguous US state on the northwest extremity of North America with the hope of brokering a peace deal between the two warring nations. Trump was optimistic that great progress had been made after the talks.
The Alaska summit gave the Russian president a rare diplomatic leverage after years of making Russia a pariah state in the West following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The meeting has also raised hopes for peace in Eastern Europe. Trump must be commended for initiating the peace effort, though the maiden summit did not achieve the expected result. Following the recent meeting Trump had with Zelensky and other European leaders, they urged Washington to take a tough stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin to prevent future conflicts.
In the earlier meeting with Trump, Putin had made a case for ceding parts of Southeastern Ukraine to Russia. Trump had mooted that the exchange of territory might be necessary to achieve lasting peace. Trump also indicated that he might convince Putin to arrange a trilateral meeting with him and Zelensky over the issue. Washington believed that such a meeting could lead to a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Good enough, Zelensky was open to a trilateral meeting with Putin.
The Russia/Ukraine war is a dark chapter in the contemporary history of Europe. It is a regression from the post-World War II gains. On 24 February, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine and thus commenced the deadliest war in Europe since the end of the cold war. No doubt, the world needs peace at the moment, and we support the call by world leaders for the war to end.
From the Russian annexation of Crimea, a Ukrainian territory in 2014, the war in the Dunbas region thereafter and the subsequent Russian annexation of Ukraine in 2022, civilian and military casualties have surpassed over a million on both sides. There are also many people who are either missing or unaccounted for. According to reports, infrastructure and property worth billions of dollars have been destroyed. Every war comes with hostility and enormous hardship and suffering and must be avoided.
Considering the carnage arising from the war, we enjoin the warring parties to urgently give peace a chance. We condemn the escalation of the conflict in spite of recent efforts to broker a ceasefire and work out a peace deal. German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has called for a ceasefire before further talks. We are worried that the lingering war in South-East Europe has caused major economic disruptions in global energy and food markets, creating substantial price increases for commodities such as oil, natural gas, and wheat.
Nigeria has also been affected by the war, because a substantial amount of wheat consumed in the country comes from Ukraine. The conflict has led to worsening food crises and surging prices for commodities, especially in low-income countries. The war has also impacted on energy, resulting in spikes in fuel and gas prices. Major economies like the United States, United Kingdom (UK), European Union (EU), and China have experienced GDP falls, while nations with limited financial buffers, especially in Africa, have faced significant economic hardship.
Unfortunately, some foreign businesses have quit Russia and Ukraine, leading to decreased earnings and outputs. It has also increased uncertainty in financial markets, with shifts in market expectations. Also, the war has destabilised global supply chains, leading to uncertainty and higher costs.
We urge world leaders to show more commitment in resolving the Russia/Ukraine war. Let the United Nations (UN) wade into the crisis and ensure peace between Russia and Ukraine. Allowing the war to linger might lead to parties resorting to desperate measures that might escalate the conflict out of proportion. Moving forward, Russia and Ukraine must give room for compromise, which offers prospect for lasting peace. Therefore, all hands must be on deck to ensure quick resolution of the conflict. The world leaders should never relent until the warring nations agree to a peace deal.
