In a somber announcement, Eva Mackevic, the Editor-in-Chief of Reader’s Digest UK for the past six years, revealed via LinkedIn on Monday evening that the beloved magazine has officially ceased operations after 86 years of publication.
Mackevic lamented the closure, citing the formidable financial challenges faced by the magazine within the contemporary magazine publishing landscape. She expressed, “Unfortunately, the company just couldn’t withstand the financial pressures of today’s unforgiving magazine publishing landscape and has ceased to trade.”
This closure mirrors a similar fate suffered by the Canadian edition of Reader’s Digest, which shuttered its operations at the end of the previous year. The Canadian branch attributed its closure to factors including “declining ad sales revenues, increased production and delivery costs, and changes in consumer reading habits.”
The recent articles visible on the Reader’s Digest UK online platform indicate a publication halt, with the most recent articles dated Wednesday, April 24th, six days prior to the time of this report.
In light of these developments, writers awaiting payment have been informed by Mackevic that efforts are underway by insolvency practitioners to communicate the next steps regarding outstanding payments and obligations.
