The recently concluded Global Affairs Magazine Awards (GAMA) 2024, held at the prestigious Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, underscored a powerful message about the critical role of supporting Nigerian youth. Regina Robinson, Convener of GAMA and CEO of Global Affairs Magazine, emphasized that the key to a brighter future for Nigeria lies in tackling the challenges faced by its young population. Speaking passionately about the importance of education, Robinson highlighted the organization’s commitment to providing scholarships to deserving, underprivileged students.
Robinson recounted how the initiative was born out of a direct encounter with children who had been sent out of school due to financial difficulties. Determined to make a difference, she and her team promised to support these students, thus planting the seed for their scholarship program. The initiative aims to sponsor qualified students, particularly those without the familial support needed to continue their education. Robinson appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to this mission, stressing the importance of sharing their blessings with others to help foster a generation of empowered, educated youth.
The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the Global Affairs Magazine Foundation (GAMF) and its official theme song, “The World is Watching,” produced by renowned reggae artist Orits Williki. The event also featured a stirring performance by Dr. Omatshola Iseli, popularly known as Tee Mac, an international flautist who also served as the chairman of the award screening committee.
The theme of the ceremony, “Global Impact Awards,” celebrated individuals who have inspired others through their exceptional contributions to society. Robinson made it clear that the awards are not given lightly; rigorous background checks ensure that only truly deserving individuals are honored. “We don’t just give awards to underserved individuals,” she emphasized, reinforcing GAMA’s commitment to recognizing genuine excellence and impactful contributions.
The event honored a diverse array of changemakers who have made significant contributions across various sectors. Among the distinguished awardees were Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, Olorogun Obaigbena, Mr. Kayode Akintemi, Mr. Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, and Hon. Lukman Oyewole Lawal. Other notable recipients included Mr. Fayoade Adegoke (AIG), Dr. Ebose Osegha, and philanthropists like Mr. Adenrele Oni and Nkechi Onyenso, each celebrated for their dedication to Nigeria’s development.
In his address, Dr. Segun Musa, the chairman of the occasion and former Lagos State gubernatorial candidate, spoke about the transformative power of philanthropy. He highlighted how acts of generosity can bridge societal gaps and inspire change, both in Nigeria and globally. His message underscored the event’s central theme: the urgent need for collective efforts in fostering a brighter future for the country.
GAMA’s platform serves not only to reward excellence but also to inspire others to contribute to the betterment of society.
