Umuagu

A United States-based medical doctor and philanthropist, Dr. Ikechukwu Samuel Emelandu, has donated a newly built and fully equipped community secondary school, valued at approximately ₦80 million to the Abia State government.

The school, located in Umuagu Ohuhu Autonomous Community, Umuahia North Local Government Area, was formally handed over to the state government at a ceremony attended by community leaders and education stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Governor Alex Otti, who was represented by the Education Secretary of Umuahia North Local Government Area, Mrs. Florence Odo Enyinna Umezurike, commended Emelandu for his commitment to educational development and investment in the future of children in the community.

The governor’s representative particularly praised the provision of modern learning facilities, essential amenities and school uniforms, describing the gesture as a significant contribution to improving access to quality education.

She urged members of the community to take ownership of the institution, protect the facilities and ensure their proper maintenance for the benefit of present and future generations.

Also speaking, the traditional ruler of Umuagu Ohuhu Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Engr. John Amaghereonu Ezeoma, described the donation as a landmark intervention that would bring secondary education closer to children in the area.

He noted that the school would spare students the hardship and expense of travelling to neighbouring communities to pursue their secondary education.

In his remarks, Emelandu disclosed that he had invested approximately ₦80 million in the construction, renovation, equipping and furnishing of the school.

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the students and disclosed plans to expand the institution to accommodate senior secondary school classes.

Earlier, Emelandu’s Personal Assistant and project supervisor, Sir Paul Nwaogwugwu, highlighted his principal’s other humanitarian interventions, including medical assistance, youth empowerment and scholarship programmes facilitated through the Late Chief Godwin Emelandu Foundation for Scholarship and Education Fund.

He recalled that Emelandu had, in 2025, also donated renovated and fully equipped classroom blocks to Umuagu Central School as part of his sustained efforts to promote educational development in the community.

The latest donation is expected to significantly improve access to secondary education, ease financial and logistic burden on parents and students, and provide better learning opportunities for children in Umuagu Ohuhu and neighbouring communities.
