The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed a fresh four-count charge against former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele for illegally printing naira notes and approving unauthorised withdrawals from the consolidated revenue fund.

The charges allege that Emefiele, acting without the required approvals from the President and the CBN board, authorised the printing of N375.52 billion in N1,000 notes, N172 billion in N500 notes, and N137.07 billion in N200 notes. He is also accused of approving the withdrawal of N124.86 billion from the consolidated revenue fund in violation of the National Assembly’s prescribed procedures.

These actions are alleged to have caused injury to the public and constitute offences under the CBN Act and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Emefiele is already facing multiple charges in Abuja and Lagos and is expected to take his plea before Justice Maryann Anenih in the FCT High Court.
