They are the last four concluding months of the calendar year. These months stand out like a sore fingers with their unique five alphabets roundly known as Ember. To many, these months of September, October, November and December means a lot to many people. To some, they are ordinarily simple months while to many they are spiritual and traditional months while many others view these months as cultural celebration and get-together. It is the month when the atmospheric weather changes by wining down its activities as the raining season devastatingly flood many parts of the country destroying properties and leaving scores of people dead in the devastation.
Unfortunately these are the months that gives security personnels like the police, Nigeria customs, NDLEA, Nigeria immigration service and The Directorate of State Services (DSS). All are fully engaged in combating crime and criminalities of every type. While the military battles with bandits and terrorists. The police handles both kidnappers and other internal criminals. Other security agencies like the NDLEA and the Nigeria Customs service are engaged with battling drug barons and exporters of illicit drug substances and prohibited imported products.
These agencies continue to battle with influx of foreign visitors into the country, by ensuring that importers do not over smart them by sabotaging the country.
Infact these concluding months of the year . ends with the abbreviation “Ember”. They are months of great uncertainty and surprises.
As the people of Gobir in Sokoto state were mourning the death of their Emir, Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa who was murdered by bandits, alongside 150 villagers. It is the month when No fewer than 10 persons were feared dead, as soldiers clashed with youths of Umuokwu Izombe community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.
About 12 houses including the palace of the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Pius Muforo were reportedly burnt and 15 others destroyed.
Unfortunately, deranged youths killed uniformed personnels of the Nigeria police in Imo state. It is the month when oil producers unilaterally jacked up the oil price across the country thereby creating suffering and hardship among the people.
In the early sixties to eighties, Ember months used to be months of preparation for grand festival and celebration across the country. Institutions usually roll out promotion just like the recent announced promotion of over 1000 promoted police officers (Men and Women). While other organizations give out gifts and other inncentives to members or staff. It is during Ember months that hospitals record high number of child birth. Coincidentally this are the months when traditional weddings are scheduled. It is the period when Nigerians conclude the year activities and end of the year programes.
Painfully, these are the months that correctly fits into what the legendary Afro beat musician Fela Ransome Kuti aptly described many years back, during the military dispensation, he, in his song “Kalakuta Republic” where he narrated the dastardly invasion of the military on his family home, noting that they left on their trail, “Sorrow, tears and blood.” Indeed, every ordinary Nigerian are suffering sequel to the high handedness and maladministration of the government as the economy continues to bite hard into the pockets of the people. Since the first day of September tears of have covered every nooks and cranny of the country. For example, there is prevalence of economic sorrow, insecurity and political sorrow. More so is the visible tears that are daily dropping from every parents eyes because they can no longer feed their families as expected. Neither could they pay for their house rents not to mention their inability to afford transport fare. Today, the blood of the people has depreciated in quality and both bandits and other blood sucking agents had continued to claim more lives. Since the beginning of the Ember month, the death graph has continued to be on the increase, while government continues to create visible distractions . As bandits strike along the fringes of local government of states like Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger, Pleateu, Katsina and Kaduna all affected by series of attacks that left many dead while dozens are in captivity. The entire country is in a sorrowful mood. People want to continue sleeping, just to forget their sorrow. Even the temporary joy derived from the AFCON match between the Nigerian team and our neighbouring country Republic of Benin, can not suffice neither can the match victory erode the suffering the people are passing through these Ember months, especially this month of September. The Nigeria victory last Saturday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state is like a man drunk or a man who sniff hard drug like cocaine just to address his pain by reducing the pain, once the effect fades away, the pain immediately resurfaces again. This is the situation Nigerians have found themselves today.
As the country continues to groan in pains, yet no one is considering grabbing the bull by the horn to consider the millions of unemployed youths roaming the streets in hopelessness because the government is inconsiderate of their plight by providing them with either factory jobs or other job opportunities. No wonder crime has opened its arms to provide evil job opportunities to many of these unemployed youths who want to illegally harvest from the gains of month by going into kidnapping, scamming, yahoo and as purveyor of illegal drugs.

IGP Egbetokun and his
extension palavar
His appointment on June 19. 2023 as the 23rd lnspector General of police was greeted with a tint of cloudy controversy that was yet to settle down and be clear, when suddenly the president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, approved another straight four years for him after serving more than one year in office which culminated to the end of his carrier as stipulated by the police regulation of retirement notice which is either 35 years service or sixty years of age.
Egbetokun was to had complied with these criteria when on September, he clocked sixty years of age because he was born on September 4. 1964. Officially, he was expected to retire on September 4, 2024. However a press statement issued and signed by the police spokesman, Assistant Commissioner of police, Muyiwa Adejobi, it confirmed the rumour making the round that there was plan to extent the tenure of the lGP by four years. However ACP Adejobi denounced the insinuation noting that “What President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, approved for the IGP is not an extension of tenure, but rather the proper application of the law governing the tenure of the office of the IGP”.
The simple question on the lips of security observers is, why did the President wait for Egbetokun to spend over a year in office before remembering to either extend or is it prolong his tenure in office by extra four years? “(To be Continued”)
