Electoral Reform: Nigeria’s elections may shift to January — Itodo

The Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, Samson Itodo, has suggested that Nigeria’s general elections could be moved to January as part of ongoing electoral reform discussions.

Itodo made the statement on Arise Television on Monday morning, where he spoke on the implications of proposed changes to the country’s electoral timeline.

According to him, if electoral reforms are to be structured in a way that avoids clashes with major Christian and Muslim fasting periods, January may become a more practical window for conducting elections.

“Some referenced dates aren’t static; they always change. If we’re considering reforms, elections will likely hold in January or after Christian and Muslim fasting periods,” he said.

He stressed that Nigeria must uphold its constitutional identity as a secular state when considering any adjustment to election dates.

“We must recognise that we’re a secular state. I have concerns that altering timelines for elections based on religious considerations might box us into a difficult situation.”
