The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said the Senate’s decision to reverse controversial provisions of the Electoral Amendment Bill demonstrates the power of a united and vigilant Nigerian public.
The party said the legislative U-turn followed sustained pressure from citizens who refused to accept changes widely viewed as a threat to electoral transparency.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the development as a victory for organised civic action and public accountability.
According to the party, what began as a contentious move within the National Assembly ended as a reminder that citizens can influence decision-making when they act collectively, both online and through peaceful street protests.
“The decision of the 10th Senate to urgently reverse the contentious provisions of the Electoral Amendment Bill is a significant victory for the Nigerian people,” the statement said.
“It shows that when citizens act with unity, clarity of purpose and resolve, they can compel accountability at the highest levels.”

The ADC stressed, however, that the Senate’s retreat should not be seen as the end of the struggle, urging Nigerians to sustain pressure until the legislative process is fully concluded.
It said the amended bill must still receive presidential assent, be properly gazetted, and enforced as law to ensure lasting electoral reform.
The party described the episode as a sign of growing political consciousness among Nigerians, noting that citizens are increasingly willing to challenge actions perceived as harmful to democratic integrity.
“This is not just a legislative correction. It is a signal that Nigerians are no longer passive observers in matters affecting their democracy,” the statement added.
The ADC also warned against complacency, saying democratic gains remain fragile and can easily be reversed if citizens disengage too early.
“Democracy does not thrive in silence or indifference. It requires participation, persistence and constant vigilance,” the party said.
It concluded that the Senate’s reversal serves both as a lesson and a warning, insisting that eternal vigilance remains the strongest safeguard of Nigeria’s democratic process.
