The new Assistant Inspector Peneral of Police Zone 9, Umuahia, comprising Imo, Abia, Anambra and Enugu states, AIG Wilson Inalegwu, has read the riot act to his officers on professionalism before, during and after the general elections. He assured the public that “officers in Zone 9 are set for the elections. We have trained and re-trained our officers on how to conduct themselves during, before and after the elections.”

“With the directive of the acting Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Adamu, there is the dire need to have peaceful atmosphere preparatory to the elections. There is absolute need to maintain and retain this enviable status before, during and after the elections.

“We call on all party leaders, candidates and their supporters to exhibit high sense of responsibility and decorum and play the game according to the rules. We expect politicians especially candidates to warn their supporters against engaging in embarrassing acts or conducts that can derail the elections.

“I have directed the commissioners of police in the zone not to fold their arms while some disgruntled, anti-democratic elements set their states on fire. We are determined to deal decisively with individuals or politicians no matter how highly placed who would engage in any form of violence before, during or after the elections.

“We have restated our resolution to provide adequate security for the INEC officials and the electorates as well as other stakeholders in the electoral process irrespective of their political affiliations. We would provide level playing ground for all. We are also resolutely committed to providing peaceful and conductive atmosphere devoid of acrimony throughout the electioneering period.

“However, we will bring the full weight of the law on any erring group or individual who indulges in acts capable of heating up the polity. The ban on proliferation of illegal arms is still in force. Anyone found in possession of illegal lethal arms or ammunition will face the consequences.

“We urge parents and guardians to talk to their children. The youth must not allow themselves to be used as political thugs. They must not be cajoled by selfish politicians who might want to use them to settle political scores. I have redeployed officers as agents of peace and progress not agents of retrogression and destabilization.”
