El-Rufai’s end time game

We are saddled with a unique bunch of weird politicians. We must contend with them. They are specifically made for our clime. And they’re proudly Nigerian.

They are not cut out for credibility. That’s not their stuff. They detest credibility like a pandemic. It’s a strange lexicon. It’s nauseating to their deaf ears. In fact, they have zero tolerance for credibility. The reason they have zero credibility on all fronts.

Wicked souls all, they bother not a hoot. Instead, they flaunt the implausibility they are made of. And they do it most treacherously. Infidelity, backstabbing run riot in their poisonous blood.

Nasir El-Rufai is the immediate governor of Kaduna State. He has been raving these times past. He imposes himself as the face of our politicians. He demonstrates that glaringly to the best of his self-acclaimed ability. He stands tall. His diminutive frame notwithstanding. He towers high in this end time game.

His old trending video is piling up rubble, debris. It’s not yet ascertained the actual age of the clip. All the same, it is still refreshingly fresh. Any moment you choose to watch it, you’re refreshed. I have done that several times over.

And my naive but startling discovery: The El-Rufai video clip exposed politicians to genuine ridicule. They were taken to the cleaners by one of their own. He obliged us a rarity. An oddity, sort of. He yielded us a flawless insight into the queer inner minds of his co-politicians, rulers and “ruiners.”

He was in his best element. He was honest, sincere and down-to-earth. All at the same time. Of course, for the wrong reason. You would not want him to stop. But he was cut short at exactly one minute, seventeen seconds.

Nevertheless, he made his point. Exceptionally too. You dare not deny him that. That’s what he knows how to do the best. Rightly or wrongly, or even both. He has the enormous capacity to perform huge tasks. His size matters not.

He described himself in the finest of words. He probably didn’t know. That at the time of this evergreen sermon there would be a time like this. A period of stocktaking like this present moment.

He precisely profiled himself and his ilk. Nobody else could have done it so accurately. He told us without prompting who exactly he was. Who he is. And who he will want to be.

In short. His past, present and future exemplified, magnified. He manifested every bit of his eerie self. A sweeping, exhaustive self-assessment. He couldn’t have hidden himself from himself. It couldn’t have been otherwise. That would be deceit.

He threw himself open. He offered himself as a naked sacrifice. He couldn’t run away from himself. He exhibited his uncanny character profoundly. He carelessly threw caution to the gutters. Fear him! El-Rufai on the marble. It is no-holds-barred:

“We have no politics of public interest or public good. Politicians proudly tell you politics is about interest. If they don’t get what they want, they are ready to collapse the system.

“Every military coup in Nigeria’s history was engineered by civilians. They have lost elections, rightly or wrongly. If a politician contests for a position and he doesn’t get it, he will not support a party member that gets the nomination.

“He would rather move to the opposition and ensure that the person that defeated him, fair and square, loses the election. So, we have a political culture where the primacy of personal interest trumps everything else.

“Now, what’s the difference between human beings and animals? So it is with most Nigerian politicians. Everyone for himself. No one for the country; no one even for the party.

“It is an interesting political culture, and is engraved. Politicians believe that is the way, that is politics. And to change it will take quite an effort.

“This is a problem. Until we fix our politics, we will continue to…”

But he spoke about himself and his ilk to himself and his ilk. He did so candidly and brilliantly. It was like never before. Any addition would be a colossal waste.

Our rulers lack morals. El-Rufai crisply depicted it in the like manner. They put on the toga of immorality with indignity. And they feel no shame. They will rather parade it with all the strength they can muster. They remain shameless in all of this.

Endeavour to do this. And you will be glad you did. Just make an attempt. Set a quality time to listen to El-Rufai’s sermon. Do it attentively. Don’t be distracted.

Watch his lips and their strange movements. You will have a revealing and near perfect understanding of why politicians behave the dastardly way they behave.

Your uncovering of them will amuse and amaze you. In one breath, you will be thrown off balance. In another quick breath. Your mind will be comfortably at rest with itself.  Try it. You will fear fears no more. Or worry worries any longer.

Even most importantly. You will come to a rewarding realisation. You will be clear in your innermost mind. Why the values our heroes past died for, matter no more to our rulers. The very reason they jettison morals for their selfishness, greed and avarice.

Now. See what’s happening in one other clime than ours. It speaks volumes to El-Rufai’s video. It is a direct opposite of the mind-set of our rulers. They wouldn’t want to hear this. But, they must hear it to their chagrin. We care less.

Indira Gandhi was Jawaharlal Nehru’s daughter. India’s first Prime Minister. He died on May 27, 1964, of heart failure. Aged 74. Gandhi stepped into his big shoes two years after, 1966 to 1977. Holding sway for more than a decade. India was never tired of her. Three years later, she was brought back in 1980.

This time, she could only last four years. Her bodyguards snuffed life out of her on October 31, 1984. She once had a chat with her father. An unnamed source carefully excerpted it from “Memoirs of Indira Gandhi.” Full of useful lessons and wisdom. She asked her father:

“What happens during war?” Her father replied: “Education and the economy collapse.” She then asked: “And what happens after education and the economy collapse?” He answered: “Morality collapses.”

She asked again: “And what happens if morality collapses as well?” He replied with profound wisdom: “How can a person live in a country where morality has collapsed?

“A person can endure and adapt to a society suffering from food shortages, economic hardship, or lack of entertainment…But the absence of morals?

“That is when the vile and the wicked prevail, traditions and laws vanish, goodness disappears, and everything turns into a jungle. At that point, a dignified life becomes almost impossible.”

That’s the state we have thrown ourselves into here: A jungle state. Where we walk morality on its head. We have collapsed our morals on our heads. And our rulers lead the pack. They are in the forefront. Our leaders are morally bankrupt. And our values are being dismantled from top-to-bottom!

El-Rufai epitomised the decay that has befallen us as a people. He typified aptly all the fears Nehru expressed to his daughter. Nehru was deeply worried. Our rulers here are not. They turn Nehru’s narrative upside down. They obey law and order in reckless disobedience and disorder.

El-Rufai is being hunted by his past and misdeeds. His present isn’t any pleasant. And he is scared of his future. He has confessed. There’s urgent need for him to make restitution. That’s why “repentant” El-Rufai pulled down the structure that made him what he is today. His utterances in that video did it precisely for him.

El-Rufai surely deserves our gratitude. We’re eternally grateful to him for what he did in that short video clip. The masterly manner he de-marketed his first and immediate constituency is gratifying. And this should be our takeaway. We should not allow him to do this in vain.

The lesson of his action should not be lost on us. It should inform our decision in the coming elections. That ought to be the fair template to assess parties and their candidates. It’s applicable to all and sundry. There’s no electioneering better than this.

If we adhere strictly to El-Rufai’s model and guide. We will not be misguided. Neither will we miss it again. And our votes will count. Let’s applaud him. His blueprint comes handy. And in good time too.

El-Rufai was not sermonising for nothing.  Nor was he telling a tale by moonlight.  He was revealing true-life stories of his tribe of politicians. What they do to win power. What they do with that power. And how they manipulate us to remain in power.

He was emphatic. They do not care whatsoever happens or happens not to us.  In as much as their ends justify their dishonourable means.

El-Rufai has told us what they have in stock for us every four years: Deception, falsehoods and falsity. We need to be meticulously guided accordingly.

Never again! We must not fall prey to their tragedies duped strategies: Tribalism and religion. They use the double-edged sword to tear us apart violently. They recycle this with ferocity each election year.

So, whoever dug so deep. And brought back this El-Rufai’s video clip to us. Surely did us a good national service. And we’re eternally grateful. The video is one roadmap to 2027 elections.

We have a duty and a huge task at hand. Let’s study it. Interrogate it. Meditate on it. And imbibe it. Don’t let us take his ranting for granted. We shouldn’t ignore it either. Out of his debris, we may find our much-sought bearing.

Unto restless and restive El-Rufai: When the past hunts, the present hurts and pains to the marrow. Signs of end time game.
