The United Kingdom has revised its post-study work visa policy, allowing international graduates from selected universities to retain access to a two-year Graduate visa, despite an earlier plan to reduce the duration to 18 months.
Under the revised arrangement, graduates of universities with strong immigration compliance records and positive employment outcomes will continue to qualify for the two-year visa.
However, international students graduating from other institutions will be eligible for an 18-month Graduate visa from January 1, 2027.
The UK government announced the adjustment in its 2026 Budget, introducing a two-tier system that links the length of the post-study visa to the university attended.
Explaining the change, the Budget document stated: “The government will also increase the duration of the Graduate visa to two years for graduates from high compliance universities where there are strong labour market outcomes.”
The government has yet to publish the list of universities that will qualify for the extended visa or explain how institutions will be assessed for compliance and employment performance.
The revision follows an earlier announcement that the standard Graduate visa for bachelor’s and master’s degree holders would be reduced from two years to 18 months, effective January 1, 2027. Doctoral graduates will, however, continue to qualify for a three-year post-study visa.

The new arrangement could affect thousands of international students, including Nigerians, who depend on the Graduate route to gain work experience in Britain after completing their studies.
Nigeria ranked as the UK’s third-largest source of sponsored international students in the year ending June 2026, with 26,060 sponsored study visas issued to Nigerian main applicants, behind China and India.
Nigerian nationals also recorded 20,604 approvals under the Graduate route during the period, making them the third-largest nationality group to benefit from the scheme.
The Graduate visa allows eligible international students to remain in the UK to work or search for employment without requiring immediate sponsorship from an employer.
However, the visa cannot be extended. Graduates seeking to remain in the country beyond its validity must switch to another eligible immigration route, such as the Skilled Worker visa, provided they meet the requirements.
Students graduating before the end of 2026 can still apply for the existing two-year Graduate visa, while the reduced 18-month duration will apply to applications submitted from January 1, 2027, subject to the exemption for graduates of qualifying universities.
The government is yet to provide further details on how universities will qualify for the two-year arrangement.
