Bishop Chimaobi Egbo has officially assumed leadership of the United Church of Christ (UCC), unveiling an ambitious vision to win one billion souls for Christ globally by 2035, while pledging to restore unity, rebuild trust and reposition the church for a new era of growth.
His consecration and inauguration held on Saturday at Faith Cathedral, Fountain of Peace, Enugu, marked the fulfilment of a prophecy declared 28 years ago that he would one day lead the church founded by his late father, Apostle Samuel Egbo.
The event attracted worshippers, church leaders, political figures and dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond, with founder of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Mike Okonkwo, presiding over the ceremony.
Speaking during the inauguration, Bishop Egbo acknowledged that the church had endured years of internal crises, misunderstandings and divisions that slowed its growth and weakened its structure.
He stressed that the church must now return to its core values of love, unity, sacrifice, humility and spiritual discipline in order to reclaim its original mandate.
Declaring what he described as a divine assignment for the future of the ministry, the new bishop unveiled a bold global evangelism vision aimed at bringing one billion souls into God’s kingdom by 2035.
“This vision is not ambition; it is a divine assignment that will require sacrifice, strategy, prayer, revival, evangelism, technology, discipleship and global unity,” he said.
Beyond spiritual growth, he said one of his priorities would be to restore peace within the church and support the vulnerable members of the society, especially the widows.
In his charge, Bishop Okonkwo urged the new bishop to remain focused on his calling and avoid external influences capable of distracting him from his mission.
He also used the occasion to call on Nigerians to prioritise competence and integrity ahead of the 2027 elections, warning against voting based on religion, ethnicity or financial inducement.
Church leaders at the event expressed optimism that Bishop Egbo’s emergence would usher in long-awaited reforms, transparency and a new season of revival within the global ministry.
