The Edo State Migration Agency yesterday announced the rescue and repatriation of three trafficked indigenes from Burkina Faso, including a young woman who lost her sight following severe abuse.

The Director-General of the agency, Hon. Lucky Agazuma, disclosed this while briefing journalists on arrival at Benin Airport, describing the development as both “a happy and a sad day.”

He said the rescue was triggered by an alert from Nigeria’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Ambassador Muhammad Galadima Danladi, who contacted the Edo State Government over the victims’ plight.

Agazuma said the information was escalated to Governor Monday Okpebholo, who ordered immediate intervention.

“It is both a happy and a sad day. One of the victims was deceived into travelling to Burkina Faso, where he was imprisoned until we secured his release,” he said.

He added that two young women were trafficked under the guise of employment but were forced into prostitution. Their refusal led to brutal abuse.

One of the victims, he said, lost her sight due to the abuse and is now receiving urgent medical attention. Efforts to trace her family in Uselu have so far proved abortive, prompting a public appeal for information.

Agazuma also disclosed that one suspect has been apprehended, while investigations continue. The rescued victims—Precious, Peace, and Evans—are currently receiving medical care.
