The recent Ibadan opposition political parties summit where 14 political parties agreed to field one presidential candidate came under condemnation yesterday in Benin City by the Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua.

Addressing journalists on the achievements of the Governor Monday Okpebholo administration in the last 18 months, Afegbua noted that while the opposition parties claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was reducing Nigeria to a one-party state, the 14 political parties led by the ADC and PDP were shrinking the political space by the decision to field one presidential candidate.

Describing what the opposition represents as politics of desperation, the Commissioner said whereas the opposition criticises every policy of the Tinubu government, they have failed to provide any alternative.

“We are very much in support of President Tinubu’s policies, initiatives and programmes.”

Afegbua disclosed that the majority of Edo people have scored the Okpebholo’s government high because of the massive development projects it is executing in all parts of the state.

He said the feat was as a result of increased allocations from the Federation Account to states occasioned by fuel subsidy removal and increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) which stands at between N9.5 and N10 billion monthly.

He further announced that the state government recently signed an agreement with a Chinese firm for N10 million metric tonnes of cement production in Owan East Local Government Area just as he also disclosed that the government has commenced the building of a 150-bed teaching hospital in Edo Central.

Besides, he said the government has employed over 1000 civil servants and ensured regular promotions in the civil service, adding that the government has discarded the use of consultants and employed good hands to drive the civil service.

Afegbua also told journalists that about 3000 persons have been recruited into the various MDAs, explaining that apart from the initial 5,000 teachers earlier employed, the government was planning to recruit more. He also said the government has fixed about 83 schools and 85 primary healthcare centres in the state.

He further announced that the government has ordered 100 CNG buses to enhance transportation, just as he disclosed that it has reinvigorated e-governance, which was shut down by the last administration.

The Commissioner, who listed several projects executed by the government, however, said it is not yet Uhuru but assured of the government’s commitment to completing projects it has initiated.
