Ecuador’s ecstatic president has declared June 26 is a public holiday in his nation following the team’s incredible upset win against four-time World Cup winners Germany on Thursday.
Daniel Noboa, who was among spectators attending the match at the MetLife Stadium, said in a post on social media that the team brought “immense joy” to Ecuador and gave the general public a day off to properly celebrate the landmark win.
He wrote: “Thank you to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults, and the tough times they went through, managed to bounce back and bring this immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow is a holiday! Long live Ecuador.”
