The Federal Government has announced plans to train more than 70 television cameramen in December 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen professional standards and improve visual journalism ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), Dasuki Ibrahim Arabi, disclosed this while receiving the leadership and members of the Society of Television Cameramen of Nigeria (SOTICAN), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, during a courtesy visit to the Bureau in Abuja.
Arabi said the programme would be organised in collaboration with the Bureau’s Strategic Communication Department and SOTICAN to enhance the technical competence, professional ethics and overall capacity of television camera professionals.
He explained that the initiative would equip participants with improved skills for quality visual documentation and responsible coverage of public activities, particularly as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
The BPSR Director-General stressed the importance of stronger partnerships between government institutions, media organisations and professional associations in improving broadcast quality and promoting responsible journalism.
He noted that television cameramen play a critical role in documenting civic activities, political campaigns and government policies, making their professional development important to effective public communication and democratic engagement.
Arabi said the planned training reflected the need to strengthen the capacity of media professionals to meet the demands of modern television production and maintain high professional standards in their coverage of national events.
Earlier, the Chairman of the SOTICAN FCT Chapter, Ekundayo Oluwafemi Caleb, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to promoting technical excellence, professional ethics and high standards in television production.
Caleb said continuous professional development for the chapter’s more than 70 members would contribute to improved broadcast quality, better documentation of official events and stronger public understanding of government policies.
He expressed the chapter’s readiness to collaborate with the Bureau and other stakeholders to advance the professional capacity of television cameramen ahead of the forthcoming electoral cycle.
The December training is expected to bring together camera professionals from public and private television organisations, with a focus on strengthening technical delivery and professional standards in Nigeria’s broadcast industry.
