ECOWAS HQ beacon of West African unity, diplomacy – Wike

ECOWAS BUILDING

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has celebrated the newly completed China-aided ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja as a powerful symbol of regional solidarity, international cooperation, and West Africa’s shared future.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony on Tuesday, Wike, represented by the FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, described the event as more than a building inauguration. “This is the handover of a vision of partnership, unity, and the collective resolve of West Africa to build enduring institutions that would shape its future,” he stated.

Wike commended the People’s Republic of China for its “remarkable contribution” to regional integration, calling the project a testament to the enduring value of diplomacy.

“This magnificent edifice is not just about concrete, steel, and glass. It is a bold statement that cooperation still matters and that diplomacy can deliver tangible and meaningful outcomes,” he added.

Highlighting Abuja’s strategic role, the Minister reaffirmed the FCT as Nigeria’s diplomatic hub and a natural base for pan-African institutions. The ECOWAS Headquarters, he noted, strengthens the city’s position as a centre for dialogue and progress.

The FCT Administration supported the project’s delivery through swift approvals, coordination, security, and infrastructure, Wike said. “Great institutions deserve worthy homes,” he emphasised, praising ECOWAS as a key expression of West Africa’s shared identity.

He urged ECOWAS member states to sustain unity and collaboration for stronger regional institutions.
