Economic hardship: Workers urged to embrace cooperative societies

From Felix Ikem, Nsukka

Against the backdrop of the current economic hardship in Nigeria, civil servants have been urged to embrace cooperative societies in their respective institutions for investment purposes.

Mrs. Eunice Anumudu made the call shortly after she was sworn in as the President of the Staff Co-operative Thrift and Credit Society Limited, Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu, Enugu state during their Annual General Meeting and inauguration of the new executives of the society held yesterday in the institution.

According to her, it is only through cooperative societies that civil servants can make savings for meaningful achievements. While expressing her preparedness to serve with diligence and commitment, Anumudu pledged to work harmoniously with the management of the institution.

The outgoing President, Malam Musa Yahaya, cited the acquisition of 155 plots of land for members in Eha-Amufu, Enugu, and Nsukka, as one of the achievements of the cooperative, urging the new executive to ensure prompt payment of contributory benefits of members on retirement. He, however, noted the non-remittance of loans by members in some banks since the inception of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System as one of the greatest challenges bedeviling the smooth running of the cooperative society.
