The Eastwing Aviation Institute in collaboration with the Eastwing Youth Foundation, has launched a scholarship competition, tagged, ‘The Face of Eastwing/South East Aviation Summit,’ aimed at tackling youth unemployment and bridging the gap in aviation.

The competition, which will be held on August 23, offers scholarship and soft skill career training to young people across the South East, thereby preparing them for roles in the growing aviation sector, currently facing acute shortage of skilled staff.

Designed to awaken ambition and drive, the programme is combining a talent-based competition with a high-impact aviation summit. The winner will receive an aviation scholarship and ambassadorship, courtesy of Eastwing Aviation Institute and direct access to internship at Enugu Airport courtesy of Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). The top five runners-up will also enjoy free visa assistance to any country of their choice, courtesy of LoFish Travel and Tours Limited. The top 10 will enjoy aviation soft skill training while the top 50 will benefit from hospitality soft skill training, courtesy of Phoenix Crest Hospitality Services. So, every youth that partakes in the initiative is a winner.

Other partners include Nigerian Connects, Foodpolis, NAN, Artmatazz Media, Pentagon Shopping Mall, GMT News and Society of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (STPN) among others.

Executive Director, Eastwing Youth Foundation, Mr. Christian Agadibe, emphasised the urgency of building local capacity, saying, “This event could not have happened at a better time. During the recruitment process at Enugu Air recently launched by Enugu State Governor, Mr. Peter Mbah, over 400 young people applied, but so many were disqualified because they lacked the required aviation licences.”

In the aviation industry, you must have the licence to practise before you are employed. This shows the importance of getting trained and certified. The pilot who landed the inaugural Enugu Air flight was from Enugu. That should tell you something, we’re seeing real opportunities springing up right here at home.

“Our goal is to create awareness that this school is here in Enugu, the first private aviation school in South East Nigeria. With us, you can study a cabin crew course, dispatcher course, or aviation safety training, and you can use these certifications and licenses anywhere in the world, not only in Nigeria. With this initiative, we hope to take youths off the street, reduce crime and make them employable.

“We’re also calling on individuals and organisations to partner with us. Sponsor five South East youths you know, it will change their lives. And participants will also earn certificates in hospitality, tourism, customer care, and aviation soft skills. So, this is a chance to build human capital in the region.”

The summit will also bring together industry leaders, and aviation experts to connect with youths and explore emerging job opportunities in the sector.
