The co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Hairporium, Cynthia Akiotu, has said the future of e-commerce goes beyond basic transactions, stressing that meaningful digital engagement, security and personalisation are the true drivers of online business success.
Speaking during a recent industry roundtable on the intersection of technology and consumer experience, she noted that modern customers are no longer satisfied with just buying products, rather they want experiences that are intuitive, personalised, and trustworthy.
“E-commerce is no longer just about transaction. It’s about resonance. Every customer wants to feel seen, understood and secured when interacting with a brand,” she said.
As an experienced IT professional with a background in cybersecurity and data science, Akiotu has applied this philosophy to Hairporium, a beauty-tech platform offering premium wigs, hair extensions, and grooming products. Under her technical leadership, the company has grown from an online store into a data-driven, AI-powered e-commerce platform with a loyal and growing customer base.
According to her, Hairporium’s success is rooted in three key pillars – intelligent personalisation, robust cybersecurity and inclusive digital design.
She revealed that by leveraging machine learning, Hairporium now delivers real-time product recommendations based on user behaviour and preferences. The platform also uses sentiment analysis to tailor content and improve customer retention.

“We’ve invested in making sure that every part of the customer journey is intuitive, relevant and secure. From onboarding to checkout, we’re using tech to anticipate and respond to user needs,” she said.
Equally central to her approach is cybersecurity. With rising concerns over data breaches and fraud, she emphasised that trust must be treated as a core business offering.
She said Hairporium adheres strictly to GDPR standards and PCI-DSS requirements for secure transactions. The platform incorporates end-to-end encryption, anomaly detection and real-time threat monitoring, all designed to give users confidence when shopping online.
She also highlighted the importance of payment flexibility in meeting customer expectations. Akiotu’s leadership extends beyond platform development. She mentors junior developers and openly shares her knowledge through workshops, writing and public speaking, with a focus on empowering women and underrepresented voices in tech.
She believes Nigerian innovators must begin to lead with both empathy and intelligence.
“We’re not just selling hair. We’re creating digital spaces where identity, dignity and trust can thrive,” she said.
