The Osun State Police Command on Saturday said it has apprehended five suspects in connection with the attack on the convoy of Osun First Lady Kafayat Oyetola, wife of the state governor, Adegboyega Oyetota.
The first lady’s convoy was attacked Friday evening at the Owode-Ede market area by some hoodlums.
It was gathered that an operative of the Directorate of State Service (DSS) was injured during the attack.
An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said, “the convoy was passing through the market when a truck suddenly blocked the lane that the convoy was passing, then the thugs who are already around the area started to haul stones at the convoy. They attacked the convoy with dangerous weapons and the operatives started shooting into the air.
“Some of the security operatives sustain injuries because one of them was shouting that we have been hit. They (thugs) shattered the glasses of the vehicles. The incident caused panic in the area,” the source added.
The media aide to the governor’s wife, Iluyomade Oluwatumise, explained that the incident happened but there was no casualty.
“All I can tell you is that no life was lost in the incident. I can’t tell you the numbers of security operatives that were injured but some of them that were attached to the convoy sustained various degrees of injuries,” she stated.
The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed that five suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack.
“We received credible information that the convoy of the first lady was attacked by hoodlums. The Divisional Police Officer(DPO) A Division, Ede, mobilized a team to the scene. He met the Chief Security Officer of Governor Oyetola at the scene who stated that one Omolola Opeyemi of Ijebu-Ode who drove an unregistered truck blocked the movement of the convoy. As a result of the traffic blockage, the driver was wounded on his forehead.
“The hoodlums took advantage of that and started stoning the convoy’s vehicles which got one DSS personnel wounded. However, five suspects were arrested at the scene. The investigation is in progress,” Opalola stated.

The All Progressives Congress (APT) the investigation of the attack accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) thugs of being behind the attack.
A statement by Kola Olabisi, the media adviser to APC chairman, Prince Gboyega Famodun, described the attack as “primitive, barbaric, shameful, dangerous and wicked.
“The attack on the governor’s convoy were some of her security officers sustained various degrees of further confirmed and authenticated the numbers of the APC leaders that the state PDP was accused to have earmarked for attack since the INEC announced Adeleke as the winner of the July 19, 2022 governorship election in Osun State,” the statement added.
Also, a socio-political group, Osun Shall Rise Again (OSRA), has expressed concern over the inability of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Wale Olokode, to arrest suspected cultists responsible for causing unrest in the state.
A statement by the chairman of the group, Lanre Akeju, stated that several months after a notorious cultist, who goes by the alias ‘Emir’ and another one called Solo were declared wanted by the Osun Police Command, these people were yet to be arrested, even when they are seen attending parties in public glare and frolicking with chieftains of the PDP.
Meanwhile, the PDP has denied involvement in the attack on the convoy of Oyetola’s wife.
A statement by the PDP Media Director, Oladele Bamiji, stated that its findings revealed the party have gone far to make that the security aides of the first lady proved the attack by beating the truck driver.
“We have gone this far with the details of the incident to strongly deny allegations that PDP thugs were responsible for the self-inflicted attacks on the convoy of the First Lady,” he said.
“We call on the first lady to apologize to the truck driver who was inhumanity treated. It is not enough to rush him to the hospital. The First Lady should atone for the sins of his overzealous escorts unless she was responsible for the directive to beat up the innocent driver.
“Instead of blaming the PDP, we call on officials of the outgoing government to be mindful of their interface with the people of Osun state. Our people have been badly governed with harsh economic pains under an inhuman administration,” PDP added.
