Dry season: Minister of Agriculture, Gov Idris flag off aerial spray against Quelea birds in Kebbi

Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security,Senator Abubakar Kyari have flag off aerial spray against the Quelea birds in the State.
The ceremony was held at Ahmadu Bello International Airport, Birnin Kebbi.
Kyari while addressing the stakeholders at the event, expressed the commitment of the Federal Government to transform the agriculture sector in Nigeria for improved production and productivity.
According to him, ” this is targeted at making food and other agricultural commodities available, accessible and affordable to all Nigerians, thereby enhancing the livelihoods of farmers and other actors within the agricultural value chains ,as well as to guarantee food and nutrition security.
“Nigeria is blessed with vast agricultural land resources,great potentials for future expansion to meet national demand for production and bumper harvest leading to the desired self- sufficiency in food, and possibly for exports.
“However, trans boundary and migratory pests possess a significant threat to food because of their devasting effect on crops especially cereal crops such as rice and wheat causing severe havoc to livelihoods of our great farmers and major threat to food security.
“This is why we are taking serious collaborative and synergetic steps to preventing and control these pests, to advert their devastating effects on crops and the ecosystem “.
The Minister,who disclosed that the exercise are taking place in 12 States including Adamaea,Bauchi,Borno,Gombe, Jigawa,Kano,Katsina,Kebbi ,Sokoto,Taraba,Yobe and Zamfara states,noted that the proper control of the pests in the areas would increased production and bumper harvest.
In his remark, Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris,who enumerated the efforts of his administration to ensure food security,noted that Quelea birds and grasshoppers are dangerous to farms land.
According to him, “therefore, any support will go a long way to getting us achieve results faster and better. I know the federal government is doing a lot to assist the state develop agriculture and produce more food for the citizens of this country,” he said.
He stressed the need for both governments to be proactive and ensure timely and intensified efforts to tame the menace of quelea birds attack.
He lauded the farmer friendly policy of President Bola Tunibu led-administration by facing the challenges of agriculture head-on, and appreciating the Minister of Agriculture, Sen. Abubakar Kyari for his support and special consideration for Kebbi.
Idris said he rolled out his agricultural development agenda known as KADAGE as a show of sincerity, determination and commitment to bring about agricultural growth in the state.
