On the 5th of August, 2024, Dr. Newton Jibunoh was conferred the title of ‘Nna Omu’.
The Palace of the Omu of Akwukwu-Igbo Kingdom in Delta State was filled with jubilation yesterday as Dr. Newton Jibunoh, renowned as the Desert Warrior and founder of Nelson Mandela Gardens & Resort, Asaba, was installed as ‘Nna Omu’ of Akwukwu-Igbo Kingdom.

This prestigious title marks a significant recognition of Dr. Jibunoh’s extensive contributions to environmental conservation, community development, and humanitarian efforts.
The ceremony took place at the royal palace of the Omu of Akwukwu-Igbo Kingdom, drawing a large crowd that included various Omus from the Anioma nation, Chiefs of the Kingdom, government officials from Delta State, and royal fathers from across the region. The atmosphere reflected the high regard in which Dr. Jibunoh is held by the community and beyond.
In her address, HRH Omu Grace Osibe of Akwukwu-Igbo Kingdom highlighted the significance of the occasion. “The conferment of this title on Dr. Newton Jibunoh, the Desert devise contributions to community development and humanity in general. The Omu is the spiritual head of the community, and this role is highly respected. It is not just a title, but a reflection of the values and leadership that Dr. Jibunoh embodies.”
HRH Omu Osibe emphasized that since assuming the title of Omu, she has worked tirelessly to foster peaceful coexistence and unity within the kingdom. She highlighted Dr. Jibunoh’s significant contributions to the Omu institution and the Akwukwu-Igbo community. His efforts have included using his personal funds to support women, the less privileged, vulnerable women, and school children, thus giving the community a much-needed facelift prior to his coronation.
“Chief Jibunoh is a kind-hearted man, a true son of Akwukwu, the Desert Warrior, and the bringer of rain,” HRH Omu Osibe said. “He stands out as a rare masterpiece among great leaders and men. This title highlights his accomplishments and his ongoing efforts to empower the community. In the gallery of great leaders and great men, he is without doubt, a rare masterpiece.”
The Omu further explained the significance of the ‘Nna Omu’ title, noting that it is reserved for individuals who have made substantial contributions to the revered Omu institution and the community, showing strong philanthropic traits and leadership abilities. She encouraged Dr. Jibunoh to continue being an exemplary ambassador for the kingdom.
“Since taking the title of Omu, I have continued to build bridges of peaceful coexistence and unity in the kingdom,” HRH Omu Osibe said. “Dr. Jibunoh has done a lot to promote the Omu institution and the Akwukwu-Igbo community. The ceremony was attended by a large crowd, including the Omus from various communities such as Onicha-Uku, Ubulu-Okiti, Issele-Uku, Ugbolu, Ogwashi-Uku, Idumuje-Ugboko, and Onicha-Ugbolu, as well as the Ogene of Onicha-Olona, among others. Well-wishers, including his management team from Nelson Mandela Gardens and Resort, were also present to witness this historic event.
The event was marked by traditional music, dance, and performances that showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Akwukwu-Igbo Kingdom. The atmosphere reflected the community’s joy and pride in honoring one of their own.
