The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called on the Federal Government not to take moves that interfere with the tenure of union leaders in the country.
Mr Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Information, made the plea while speaking to reporters in Abuja on Thursday.
Upah claimed that the government intended to impose a two-year mandate on labour leaders.
He stated that such conduct would constitute intervention in the internal affairs of trade unions and a flagrant violation of the corpus of Labour Law and International Labour Organization, ILO, Conventions.

“The federal government should put an end to the ongoing alleged hybrid war against Congress.
“However, if the government feels that two years is the best tenure to go, it should be two years for everyone including office of the President and principal public officers as well,” he stated.
He also urged the administration to quit interfering in the operations of the Labour Party and to end the destabilization effort targeting opposition parties.
Upah stated that the police must offer an unreserved apology to the NLC for the invasion of its headquarters or face industrial action or other measures available to Congress to show its unhappiness.
