The National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) has warned producers that the Federal Government will not compromise on seed production.

NASC Acting Director General, Dr Ishiak Othman Khalid, gave the warning at the annual early generation seed (EGS) event yesterday in Abuja.

According to him, seed producers, researchers, policymakers, and development partners should collaborate to strengthen the seed sector.

He said they should explore new technologies and best practices to revolutionise seed production, improve quality assurance, and increase farmers’ access to superior seeds.

He added that the ongoing dialogue would focus on several key areas: “Assessing the Current Landscape – Taking stock of progress in EGS production, quality control, and distribution while identifying challenges that need urgent intervention.”

“Strengthening Partnerships – Enhancing collaboration between seed producers, researchers, policymakers, and development partners to build a more effective and sustainable seed system.”

“Harnessing Innovation – Exploring new technologies and best practices to revolutionise seed production, improve quality assurance, and increase farmer access to superior seeds.”

“Data-Driven Decision-Making – Conducting the EGS Annual Data Collection Survey to provide critical insights that will guide policies and strategies for the coming years.”

“Rolling out policy changes to EGS Production in the country and unveiling of new guidelines and regulations that will guide EGS production and commercialisation going forward.”

Speaking on EGS, he said: “The purpose is to ensure that our inactions do not jeopardise the role of quality seeds as the vehicle for agricultural transformation and the achievement of the Nation’s food security.”
