From Okwe Obi, Abuja

The Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions (ASURI) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have threatened to picket the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), over the continuous stay in office by the Director General, Professor Hussaini Doko Ibrahim, despite tenure completion.

According to a petition received yesterday, Ibrahim was appointed Ag. Director General of RMRDC between November, 2013 and 7th April, 2014.

He was subsequently appointed as substantive Director-General for a 5-year term on 8th April, 2014    7th April, 2019 and thereafter reappointed for a second term of 5 year from 8th April, 2019 – 7th April, 2024 amounting to 10 years, 6 months, but still want to push for 2 years extension in office.

ASURI General Secretary, Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku, in a petition dated March 18,1024, and addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said: “In the case of Prof. Doko Ibrahim, he got a retroactive approval of 5years in 2014 for the first tenure and another 5years in 2019 for the second tenure for an  RMRDC amended Act 28 of 2022 that was passed by the National Assembly in August, 2022.

“In essence, he has illegally occupied the seat for additional 2 years yet his tenure has expired and refused to vacate office with the connivance of the highly placed individuals.

“We know that the President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not aware of the atrocities being perpetrated in the Council.

“You may wish to know that since the inception of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) in 1988 (36 years), no Director General has spent more than 8 years in office as  attested to by the various Director-Generals.”
