The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is ramping up efforts to bring the benefits of digital technology to all corners of Nigeria. This initiative aligns with the national goal of transforming Nigeria into a global technology hub and driving economic diversification.
NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa made this announcement during a meeting with Senior Special Advisers (SSAs) to the President on Community Engagement from the South-East, South-West, and North-West regions. The meeting focused on potential collaboration to bridge the digital divide in Nigeria.
Inuwa emphasized that NITDA’s vision for digital inclusion aligns with President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight priority areas, particularly economic reform for sustained growth. He highlighted the importance of the agency’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0) 2024-2027, which outlines key pillars to achieve these goals.
“Foster Digital Literacy and Cultivate Talents” is a cornerstone of SRAP 2.0. Inuwa outlined an ambitious target of achieving 70 per cent digital literacy by 2027, a stepping stone towards the ultimate goal of 95 per cent by 2030.”
NITDA is collaborating with the Ministry of Education to integrate digital literacy into school curriculums. Additionally, digital literacy certifications will become a prerequisite for government employment.
For those outside the formal education system, NITDA is employing various channels to promote digital literacy. Public awareness campaigns will utilize television programs, social media, radio broadcasts, and roadshows.
The 3 Million Tech Talent program, a joint effort by NITDA and the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, is another crucial initiative. This program addresses skill gaps by training young Nigerians in high-demand digital skills.
Abdallah Tanko Yakassai, SSA to the President on Community Engagement (North-West), expressed his team’s eagerness to partner with NITDA in disseminating information and promoting digital literacy programs across all 774 local government areas (LGAs) in Nigeria.
“We need to show the people the importance of your programs and how they can key into it,” Yakassai stated.
This collaborative effort by NITDA and the SSAs on Community Engagement demonstrates a strong commitment to ensuring that all Nigerians benefit from the digital revolution.”
