Nigeria’s digital future is bright, but requires a skilled workforce. To achieve this, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is urging collaboration to overhaul the national curriculum. This revamp would integrate digital skills at all educational levels, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s plan to boost digital literacy by 2027.
NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, met with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to discuss this crucial initiative. Inuwa emphasized the transformative power of technology, highlighting its role in shaping curriculum design, content, and learning processes. He stressed that Nigeria must embrace digitalization to remain competitive.
“We need a curriculum built on skills and clear outcomes, one that equips graduates for the 21st-century job market,” Inuwa stated. “This will attract investment and empower Nigerians to thrive in the digital economy.” He further connected digital skills development to national progress, sustainable development, and the creative arts sector.
Inuwa also noted the need for the curriculum to reflect the evolving digital landscape. By equipping students with the latest knowledge and tools, Nigeria can position itself for growth.
NERDC’s Executive Secretary, Professor Ismail Janaidu, echoed Inuwa’s sentiments. He acknowledged NERDC’s role in curriculum development and the importance of digital literacy for national development. Janaidu emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration between NITDA and NERDC to explore areas of partnership that benefit national development.
Professor Janaidu also highlighted NERDC’s other vital roles, including promoting book development, educational research, and the use of Nigerian languages in education. He commended NITDA’s significant contributions to advancing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) across Nigeria.
This collaborative effort between NITDA and NERDC signifies a critical step towards preparing Nigeria’s youth for the digital age. By integrating digital skills into the curriculum, Nigeria can empower its citizens and unlock its full economic potential.
