Former Imo State deputy governor, Prince Eze Madumere, has described democracy as the “panacea” for Nigeria’s sustainable socio-economic and cultural development, urging citizens to embrace unity, accountability, and active participation as the country marks 2026 Democracy Day.

Speaking with newsmen in Owerri, the American-trained technocrat and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said Nigeria’s progress hinges on good governance, not just elections.

“Democracy represents the roadmap for industrial revolution, infrastructure renewal, and job creation for our teeming youths,” Madumere said.

He called on leaders at all levels to place public interest above personal and political considerations, stressing that the true essence of democracy lies in “accountability, service, transparency, and inclusivity.”

Madumere urged Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of democratic heroes and the collective responsibility to strengthen democratic institutions.

“Democracy Day remains a symbol of the people’s power, resilience, and unwavering determination to build a nation founded on justice, equity, freedom, and the rule of law,” he said.

The Imo East Senatorial hopeful acknowledged Nigeria’s democratic gains but said more commitment is needed on security, economic growth, and citizen welfare.

A human capital development expert, Madumere reaffirmed his commitment to policies that create opportunities for youth, empower women, and strengthen the local economy if elected to represent Owerri Zone.

He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s trajectory and encouraged citizens not to “lose hope in the Nigerian project” but to participate actively in the democratic process. He extended with felicitations to the people of Owerri Zone, Imo State, and Nigerians nationwide, adding:

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our faith in our nation and recommit ourselves to the ideals of democracy. Together, we can build a society where justice prevails, opportunities abound, and every citizen can aspire to a better future.”

Looking ahead to the next election cycle, Madumere appealed to voters and stakeholders in Imo and Owerri Zone to embrace what he termed the “Journey of Grace” for the “emancipation and elevation of the zone.”

“A new Owerri Senatorial zone is possible,” he said, wishing residents a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day.
