From Ben Dunno, Warri

Governor  Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, has applauded Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSL), for building a standard educational centre at the Warri Correctional Facility, noting that it would go a long way in easing the process of inmates integration in society.

Speaking at the commissioning of eight blocks of classroom  donated by Tantita to the orrectional centre, Okere Road, Warri South Council area, he hailed the initiative aimed at giving inmates a second chance to be good citizens.

Represented by Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerovwo Tonukanrin, the governor said: “The presence of the classroom blocks is not merely an academic exercise but a lifetime offer to give hope and create a sustainable means of livelihood for inmates. The blocks provide the platform for literacy programmes, vocational training and academic pursuit.”

He stressed that the project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), particularly on quality education, and also inline with the State government’s MORE Agenda in the educational sector.

Comptroller-General of Correctional Centers, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakugbe, represented by Assistant Comptroller General of Corrections, Kingsley Njoku, said, “Our gathering here has further demonstrated the importance attached to education as a veritable tool for reformation in the correctional service. The service has put in motion educational facilities in all the custodial centres across the nation, from primary, secondary and university, through the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

“It may interest you to know that some states like Rivers, Enugu, Lagos, Kuje (Abuja), etc. have produced students at first degree, master’s, and PhD, so many more inmates are currently undergoing various programmes across the country. The commissioning of this block of classrooms in this Custodial Centre aligns with our objective and will further add to the number of custodial centres having NOUN Study Centre, and give opportunity to the growing number of inmates seeking education to pursue their career unhindered.”

Managing Director of Tantita, Kestin Pondi, said: “It is a day that reinforces our conviction that security is not only about protecting assets and territories, but also about investing in human lives, rebuilding destinies, and shaping a better future for our society.

“The project is also consistent with Tantita’s wider commitment to community development across Nigeria. Only recently, Tantita had the honour of renovating the historic Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna, a landmark of faith and culture. Projects like this one reflects our philosophy that true security is built not only through vigilance alone, but also through investment in people, communities, and the values that bind us together.

“Education is the most powerful tool of rehabilitation. It opens the mind, reforms character, and creates pathways for reintegration into society. By God’s grace, this facility will soon host NOUN Study Centre, giving both inmates and staff access to a qualitative path to academic advancement.

“This milestone will not only transform individuals but will also strengthen our collective security as a nation, because an educated mind is more inclined to productivity.”
