Residents of Abuta lane, Kamwanya Konwea Street and other streets along the bank of the Asaba axis of River Niger, Delta State, have abandoned their homes as a result of surging flood from the river.
The surging water has overrun most houses in the areas, leaving them desolate.
When our correspondent visited the flooded part of Abuta lane, submerged houses were under lock and key, indicating that the occupants have since fled the disaster zone.
A branch of a new generation, Pasture of Life International, which was affected by the annual flood some years ago, seemed to overcome the challenge.
Though the church building is still in the disaster zone, it was not under the water.
A member of the church told this reporter that when the unwanted visitor became a yearly menace, the former building was destroyed.
He said the land was properly sand filled to take the building out of the reach of the flood before the construction work began.
However, he said members were still watchful as the water level continues to rise on the Niger to avoid being caught unawares.
Meanwhile, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Patrick Ukah has expressed the government’s readiness to tackle the challenges that might be thrown up by the flood.
Ukah who is the chairman of the state 2022 Flood Management Committee, stated this readiness during a meeting of the committee in Asaba.
He said holding camps have been set up to accommodate displaced residents temporary until the water receded.
Ukah who led members of the committee to one of the camps at Ogbe-Afor Primary School in Asaba expressed satisfaction with the facilities.
