Forty mission schools in Delta State will soon benefit from the N400 million grant approved for them by the state government.
The approval of the grant was part of the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday in Asaba.
The meeting was presided over by the state deputy governor, Kingsley Otuaro, according to Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu who briefed reporters.
Aniagwu said each school would get N10 million to upgrade their facilities.
Recall that the immediate past administration returned the 40 schools to their missionary owners.
Aniagwu said since the schools were returned, there has been no government intervention, particularly in the area of upgrading facilities.
He clarified that the management of the returned mission schools had actually requested assistance from the government.
“If you will recall, the mission schools were taken over by the government and later returned with most of the facilities in bad shape.
“So the management of the schools actually requested for assistance, and it took a long time in approving because we were taking a look at the appropriateness of the request.
“And we saw the need to give assistance because we discovered that the schools were being run like humanitarian endeavours,” he said.
Aniagwu expressed assurance that the approval would not generate another request, especially from private school owners for intervention.
In other areas, Aniagwu said exco approved the rehabilitation of phase one (Umunede to Obior) of the old Lagos-Asaba road.
He said the construction of an additional lecture hall at Maritime University in Okerenkoko was also approved.
According to him, the construction of flood control measures at Core Area one in Asaba, as well as the construction of adjoining streets in Asaba, is to add to the beauty of the state capital.
