The Dallas Mavericks have announced the appointment of Masai Ujiri as Team President and Alternate Governor, signaling a bold move to reshape the franchise’s future.

Ujiri, one of the NBA’s most respected executives, will take charge of all basketball operations, including roster construction, scouting, and player personnel, while working closely with team leadership to define the Mavericks’ long-term philosophy.

Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont described the appointment as a major step forward for the organization.

“The Dallas Mavericks are committed to being a world-class organization with a strong culture and focused on winning championships. Masai Ujiri is one of the great basketball leaders of this generation and his addition to our franchise is a critical step in meeting our goals,” Dumont said. “We are honored to have him join the Mavs family… We are very excited about the future of our team.”

Ujiri arrives in Dallas after a highly successful tenure with the Toronto Raptors, where he served as Vice Chairman and President and guided the franchise to its first NBA championship in 2019. Renowned for his strategic roster building and talent development, he has consistently positioned teams for sustained competitiveness.

Beyond the court, Ujiri is the founder of Giants of Africa, an initiative dedicated to empowering African youth through basketball, education, and leadership. His global influence was further recognized in 2025 when he was named a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Advocate.

Reacting to his appointment, Ujiri expressed optimism about the task ahead.

“I’m honored to join the Dallas Mavericks and step into this role at such an important time for the organization,” he said. “This is a franchise with a proud history, passionate fans, and a commitment to winning… We will win in Dallas.”

Ujiri began his NBA journey as an international scout with the Orlando Magic and Denver Nuggets before rising to become Executive of the Year in Denver. His recent involvement with the WNBA’s Toronto Tempo ownership group further highlights his commitment to the growth of basketball globally.

The Mavericks are expected to formally introduce Ujiri at a press conference on Tuesday, May 5, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, as the franchise begins a new chapter under his leadership.
