Chief Executive Officer of Barnksforte Adedayo Bankole has stressed the need for Nigerians to protect their data.

Speaking on the sidelines of the National Day of Identity 2024 event in Abuja recently, he stated that criminal elements are constantly on the lookout for opportunities to steal personal information for malicious purposes.

Bankole explained that cybercrime is a global issue, but reassured attendees that efforts are underway to implement best practices in data transmission and processing.

He mentioned the establishment of data protection laws that will enforce strict protocols to safeguard how data is transmitted and prepared, ensuring that the highest industry standards are maintained.

“There is more scrutiny and more technology being deployed to make sure that a lot of data is being protected. So if you look into the modification systems, you will find out that we make sure that we verify the ownership of the data in order not to allow someone else to use your data.

“To be honest with you, it is a lot of effort. The criminals are out there. Criminals want to use your data to do a lot of things and we are working so hard to make sure we put the protection in place.”

President Bola Tinubu during the event, said that unique proof of identity is essential to provide necessary welfare services to citizens in line with their fundamental human rights.

Tinubu noted that without accurate identification, the government’s ability to effectively protect and provide for its people will remain a challenge.

The President, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, said, “DPI is the backbone that enables access to essential services, from healthcare and education to financial inclusion and social welfare.

“It is through robust DPI that we can ensure every Nigerian, regardless of their background or location, has the opportunity to participate fully in our nation’s growth.

“Our administration’s 8-point agenda, which includes food security, ending poverty, economic growth and job creation, access to capital, improving security, enhancing the business environment, upholding the rule of law, and fighting corruption, is intrinsically linked to the success of our digital identity initiatives.”
