The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the American Business Council (ABC) have agreed to deepen trade ties and tackle bottlenecks affecting business operations, pledging sustained engagement between the public and private sectors.

The commitment emerged from the two bodies’ quarterly meeting held on June 16, 2026, at Customs Service Headquarters in Abuja, where talks focused on trade facilitation, security, and strengthening economic relations between Nigeria and the United States.

Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi told participants that regular consultation with stakeholders would now become a fixture on the Service’s calendar.

“It is our intention that we will institutionalise this as a permanent feature of the Customs calendar because of the importance we attach to this kind of engagement,” Adeniyi said.

He updated the meeting on several ongoing trade facilitation initiatives, including the Advance Ruling system, the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme, Post Clearance Audit, the B’Odogwu platform, and improvements underway in scanning integration and cargo clearance procedures.

American Business Council members welcomed the reforms but pressed for faster mechanisms to resolve outstanding challenges facing businesses operating in the country.

ABC President Nneka Enwereji called the session productive and commended Customs leadership for its commitment to improving the ease of doing business.

“This session has been phenomenal and demonstrates your commitment to improving ease of doing business. You have raised the bar, and there is a lot that can be learned from this,” she said.
