From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar

A member of the Cross River State House of Assembly representing Obubra 1 State Constituency, Honourable Ovat Agbor, has said a recent windstorm in his constituency destroyed 150 houses and displaced 500 people.

The lawmaker listed the impacted communities in the area to include Wakandei, Obubra Village, Ogada and Ofonbonga all in Obubra local government.

He pleaded with both the State and National Emergency Management Agencies to urgently provide relief materials for victims of the devastating windstorm.

According to the lawmaker, “It is very pathetic, pathetic because when I look at the level of destruction, I wonder how the people are going to fare.

“One hundred and fifty houses blown off, hundreds of electric poles and transformers destroyed, health centres, schools and many more valuables all destroyed, it’s indeed pathetic.

“In a few days time, schools would be reopening. What is the fate of the children whose school buildings have been destroyed?

” You can see the urgency of government’s intervention in ameliorating the plights of the people at this point in time,” he lamented.

He noted that victims of the devastating windstorm are currently taking shelter in open fields in schools, churches and health centres.

He also disclosed that they are most vulnerable to diseases and emergencies arising from their exposure to vectors and pleaded for intervention.

Meanwhile, the state governor Senator Bassey Otu has issued a directive for the urgent restoration of electricity in the aftermath of the destructive windstorm that wreaked havoc in the Obubra local government area.

The impact of the storm in Ogada particularly resulted in the destruction of over forty-five electrical poles and multiple transformers, leaving residents in darkness.

The government through Francis Ekpo, the Director General of the State Electrification Agency (SEA) has promised to engage with the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) to expedite the replacement of damaged infrastructure and restore power to the affected areas without delay.
