Cross River: Murder of young woman by boyfriend sparks protest

A 35-year-old man, Malime Ejor, has allegedly murdered his girlfriend, Moshie Igu, 26, at a farm in Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The suspect reportedly took his girlfriend to a stream, where he inflicted machete cuts on her, which ultimately resulted in her death on Saturday, March 28.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident in a statement made available in Calabar.

According to him, “Preliminary information reveals that on March 28, 2026, at about 0600 hrs, one Malime Sunday Ejor, ‘M’, aged 35 years, allegedly attacked his girlfriend, Moshie Lucy Igu, ‘F’, aged 26 years, at a farm in Nwang Village, Ekajuk, Ogoja.

“The suspect reportedly took the victim to a nearby stream close to the farm, where he inflicted machete cuts on her, resulting in her death.

“Upon receipt of the report, police operatives promptly visited the scene. The suspect was apprehended and rescued from an attempted mob action by angry youths. He is currently in police custody for his safety and ongoing investigation.

“The victim’s remains are yet to be deposited at the General Hospital Mortuary, Ogoja, as necessary arrangements are being concluded,” he said.

The state police spokesman added that the case is being prepared for transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and thorough investigation.

Meanwhile, on Monday morning, hundreds of women and youths staged a protest around the city, demanding the release of the suspect.

The women and youths from Nwang I & II and other parts of Ekajuk Clan, Ogoja, stormed the Area Command/Division in Ogoja, demanding the release of the murder suspect earlier transferred to SCID Calabar.

The crowd turned violent, attacking officers and damaging a Hyundai vehicle and parts of the RRS building. Smoke canisters were deployed to disperse them, and eight suspects were arrested.

Police reports indicate that the situation is now under control. The suspects were later released to a community leader to douse tension.
