In a striking show of loyalty that defied party lines, hundreds of residents of Mkpani community in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State trooped out to rally behind Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, despite the All Progressives Congress (APC) denying him a return ticket.
What was meant to be a routine visit turned into a carnival of sorts, as Eteng, who represents Cross River Central and serves as Deputy Director-General (South-South) of the Tinubu Support Group (TSG), was escorted through major streets by a mammoth crowd bearing placards.
“Where you go, we will follow,” read one placard. Another read: “We appreciate you for lighting up our community with streetlights.”
For the people of Mkpani, the APC’s decision was secondary, and their verdict on Eteng was loud and clear.
Jones Abel, a community stakeholder, said: “I am speaking the minds of the people. Judging from the crowd you see here, you don’t really need any further pronouncement to know that Eteng is loved by his people.”

He admitted that residents were disappointed that the APC did not return their son, but insisted that Eteng’s performance in the Senate had already won him a permanent place in their hearts.
Similarly, a female resident declared that the community’s political direction would henceforth be determined by Eteng.
“With or without a return ticket, we will continue to support whoever Senator Williams directs us to. That is why we are fully behind him in his support for President Tinubu’s re-election,” she said.
Eteng used the visit to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of 2027, and the crowd’s response was emphatic in favour of the president’s re-election.
