The Akure Division of the Court of Appeal on Thursday upheld the judgment of the Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo, which found businessman and hotelier Rahmon Adedoyin guilty of murder.

The court subsequently affirmed the death sentence by hanging, as declared by the lower court, after Adedoyin was found guilty of murdering Timothy Adegoke, a postgraduate student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

Adegoke was discovered dead in one of the rooms at Hilton Hotel, Ile-Ife, owned by Adedoyin. His death led to the arrest and subsequent prosecution of Adedoyin and other staff members of the hotel.

Delivering its judgment, the appellate court stated: “The judgment of the High Court of Osun State stands. Adedoyin’s appeal is dismissed in part.”

The Court of Appeal ruled that Adedoyin was properly convicted and sentenced to death appropriately.

However, the appellate court set aside certain aspects of the lower court’s orders. These included:

The order of forfeiture of Hilton Hotel, which was quashed.

The order for education scholarships to the children of Timothy Adegoke by Adedoyin and others, which was also quashed.

Adegoke’s death, reported in November 2021, occurred after he was found lifeless in the Hilton Hotel in Ile-Ife, where he had lodged.
