Anthony Kola-Olusanya, an expert in Environmental Sustainability, has attributed the ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s battle against insecurity to corruption, as well as ethno-religious and regional divisions.
Speaking during a lecture titled “Governance and Security in Nigeria: Progress, Challenges, and Future Directions” at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Osogbo, yesterday, Olusanya,a Professor ,highlighted the detrimental effects of political interference on accountability mechanisms. He noted that corruption undermines the social fabric, diverts national resources, and normalizes mediocrity.
While acknowledging some progress in institutional reform and technological advancements within Nigeria’s security sector, Olusanya emphasized that these foundations can only thrive if cultivated with honesty, discipline, and commitment.
He described socio-economic inequality as a significant barrier, stating that Nigeria’s wealth is concentrated among a few, leaving millions struggling to survive. “Youth unemployment has become a national emergency,” he added.

Olusanya criticized the use of identity politics, arguing that rather than harnessing diversity as strength, Nigeria has allowed it to dictate access to power and resources. “The politicization of ethnicity and religion erodes trust and deepens perceptions of exclusion,” Olusanya said.
He asserted that Nigeria possesses the necessary tools, talent, and determination to build a secure and prosperous nation, emphasizing the need for political will, institutional capacity, and moral clarity to lead effectively.
Earlier, Kolapo Alimi, the Osun Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, linked corruption and the politicization of national issues to the country’s persistent insecurity. He warned that until these challenges are addressed, security issues will remain unresolved.
Wasiu Ajadosu, Chairman of Osun NUJ, expressed concern that insecurity persists despite substantial financial investments in combating it. He noted that the topic was chosen to assess the current situation and explore potential solutions moving forward.
