The achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the Niger Delta region has been anchored on a peaceful and stable environment through proactive response to early warning systems for conflict prevention.

The assertion was made by a professor of African History, Peace and Conflict Studies, Olawale Albert, in the keynote address, which he presented at 2025 Retreat of the Department of Dispute and Conflict Resolution (DCR) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), held in Ikeja, Lagos.

The retreat with the theme: ‘Effective Early Warning System: Strategising for Inclusive Peace Process to Promote Sustainable Development’, drew participants from various departments and strata of the NDDC with a view to translating lessons derived into actions and unlocking the region’s vast potential.

Speaking on the sub-theme: ‘Effective Early Warning System for Conflict Prevention: A key to Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Niger Delta Region’, Albert emphasised the urgent need for proactive strategies to ensure peace, stability and inclusive development in the region.

According to him, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is a policy framework designed to drive Nigeria’s development across various sectors, focusing on economic revitalisation, social inclusion and improved governance.

“In the Niger Delta, the agenda’s success depends on how well its core strategies address both the root causes and the manifestations of conflict.”

He noted that aligning early warning with renewed hope agenda would require the integration of early warning systems into the fabrics of the region’s governance and development programme.

Albert was optimistic that the move would help to de-escalate local disputes and enhance trust between communities and government.

The Managing Director of NDDC, Samuel Ogbuku, in his address, said the commission under his watch has put a number of mechanisms and strategies in place to avert the recurrence of the challenges the region had faced in the past.

Ogbuku, represented by his Special Adviser on Security Matter, Ibarakumo Otobo, emphasised NDDC’s readiness to work assiduously in achieving the renewed hope agenda of the current administration in the region.

Earlier in his address, the Acting Director, DCR, Ayewumi Ogedegbe, identified proactive mechanisms, anticipation and prevention of conflict before its escalation as key to realising the renewed hope agenda of the current administration.
