Commuters travelling to the South East and the South South for the Yuletide to celebrate with their loved ones have been having very unpleasant experience travelling by road due to the poor state of the roads, most especially those travelling from Lagos. The journey has become so difficult that many spend two days on the road.
This year saw a high volume of vehicular movement, especially from Lagos due to the exorbitant hike in air fares.
Outside the poor condition of the road, constructions works and repairs at key points in the journey delay travellers for hours.
Such problematic areas include the Ijebu Ode area where currently a flyover is being constructed. The work slows down free flow of traffic leading to long delays on the road.
At the Benin byepass, commuters are forced to spend several hours on the express way due to the bad road and activities of tanker drivers.
Asaba-Onitsha expressway is another difficult spot. The construction work on the expressway in Asaba is causing a lot of difficulties for commuters also.
Many commuters are calling on the South East governors to act collectively and well ahead of time by engaging relevant federal agencies such as FERMA, the Federal Ministry of Works and state governors of some of the states outside the South East to make the route motorable and reduce the difficulties commuters and motorists are passing through.
This will enable a coordinated intervention on the road and reduce the stress and difficulties motorists are currently facing during the holiday season.
