The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced that its national trials for the 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from June 20 to 22 at the Yabatech Sports Complex in Yaba, Lagos.

The three-day event will serve as the official selection competition for Nigerian track and field athletes seeking places on Team Nigeria for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the federation’s Media Coordinator, Dr. Kola Oredipe, athletes are expected to arrive on June 19, with departure scheduled for June 23.

The trials will feature 32 events across the men’s and women’s categories, providing athletes with an opportunity to secure selection for one of the country’s most important international competitions of the year.

The statement revealed that the AFN Technical Committee, headed by Gabriel Okon, has released the qualifying standards for both home-based and foreign-based athletes. While participation in the men’s and women’s 100m, 200m and 400m events will be restricted to athletes who have attained the stipulated qualifying marks, all other track and field events will remain open for participation.

The federation also disclosed that accommodation will be provided for athletes who achieved the qualifying standards during the stipulated qualification period, with the list of eligible athletes expected to be released in the coming days.

Meanwhile, AFN Secretary-General Israel Inwang has dispatched invitations to State Directors of Sports, Chairmen of State Athletics Associations, coaches, managers, military and paramilitary athletics bodies, as well as athletics clubs across the country to participate in the trials.

AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, has called on athletics stakeholders and fans nationwide to support the event and be part of the selection process that will shape Nigeria’s team for Glasgow 2026.

Okowa also expressed appreciation to the leadership of the National Sports Commission for its continued support of the federation and Nigerian athletes.
